Default Front End suspension Noise only in cold weather

    Hi guys,

I've read on here about the front end suspension noise but the problem I have is the the creaking noise only happens during cold weather (which we get alot of in Canberra).

Any ideas what could the issue is it bushes that a worn or struts. I would appreciate a bit of a steer on this one.

    Cheers,

    Mike

You have to give more detail as to what type of noise it is and when it is loudest.
ie, speed bumps, knock, squeak etc?

its a creaking sort of noise on low speed bumps or like pulling in and out of driveways speed bumps

also more a clunk when at normal speeds (60 - 80) with larger bumps in the road

but this is only noticeable when its cold temperatures, not on days like today where is about 20ish

If it's over speed bumps at low speeds it might be your swaybar bushes which need greasing

Usually is the sway bar bushes, try spraying them to start with, use Wurth Rostof or similar and if that cures it for a while then you know the issue and can get them replaced

    I'd use rubber grease.
    Better for the rubber.

Why, Rostof will not damage the rubber and chances are te old bushes are rooted. Add to this without removing them you can't get rubber grease in there

OK I haven't used Rostoff for years and thought it was mineral based which you know is not good for rubber.

Its only 4 bolts to remove the old bushes. The rubber grease will lubricate and quieten noisy bushes unless they're totally chopped out.
With old bushes I usually smear the grease inside and out.
Got a couple of years further use on my old Beetle til I could buy a new pair.

Anyway the creaking noise sounds to me like a dry swaybar link ball joint or a dry ball joint.

Where can I get that Rostof at? repco or the likes

The father in law suggested a spray of WD40, would that make much difference ?

I am suspecting the bushes could be gone, its coming up to 190xxx and no idea when they were last changed.

Also noticed tonight the creak seemed to happen a lot more and its not all that cool here and was more noticeable when the body weight was shifting in cornering

All said and done WD40 is a good diagnostic tool but it aint Rost Off. Rost Off has this capillary action thing happening that allows it to flow uphill (which means it gets in), then it becomes a super tacky lube after all the volatile solvents boil off.
